Rheine River Cruise and Heidelberg May 25th, 2012

This is Friday of our last weekend in Germany.  The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed a Rheine River castle tour.  We also made a couple other quick stops as well.  It's amazing how many castles there are along the Rheine.  I hope you enjoy the pictures!!

It was a bright sunny day!  The sky is so blue there!

Loaded up and ready to go!

Getting our tickets for the castle tour.

Waiting for our boat.

There were geese and ducks!

Getting ready to board.

A closeup.

Hills and hills of grapevines.

The Mouse Tower.

This tower has an interesting story.  We learned that there is a folk tale about this tower that involves a cruel ruler, who, after murdering some peasants during time of famine, was eaten alive by mice in this tower.  Then, as I was trying to remind myself of the story for this blog post, I made an interesting discovery!  I'm sure many of you are familiar with the poem "The Children's Hour" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.  In one of the verses, it references this mouse tower!

"They almost devour me with kisses,
Their arms about me entwine,
Till I think of the Bishop of Bingen
In his Mouse-Tower on the Rhine!"

Before heading off to our next destination, we enjoyed some gelato!

German buildings.

A church we passed on our way.

A rather large bridge!

We made a quick stop in Mannheim to find a starbucks!

After going as far as the GPS would take us, daddy, Sabrina, and I set off on foot and were successful!

Back at the van.

We headed to Heidelberg for the last time (at least for now :).  We just had to visit one of our most favorite places again (you can see the castle off in the distance).

We went back to the Thingstatte. I know this picture is blurry, but it's the only one we took!

Back at Saint Michael's Basilica.

The moon over heidelberg.

Looking down on Heidelberg at night.

Of course we had to get our favorite doner one last time too!!

Fries with mayonnaise!
